ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to examine the relations between faculty members' attitudes in Higher Education Saudi universities and demographic factors (i.e., academic rank, gender, years of experience, and type of college) by using the Interaction with Disabled Persons (IDP) Scale and multiple regression analysis. Results indicate that gender was associated with one dimension: vulnerability. The ranks of assistant professor and full professor were related to two dimensions: discomfort in social interactions and a coping-succumbing framework. Also, the college education variable was related to three dimensions: discomfort in social interactions, perceived level of information, and vulnerability. Results show that faculty members had lower negative attitudes toward students with mild intellectual disabilities in Higher Education. Based on study results, the researcher recommends more faculty training in how to support the Higher Education of students with disabilities as well as accessible support centers for individuals with disabilities to help staff as well as students. Also, universities should be made accessible to people with all types of disabilities who have a right to Higher Education.

ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: This study assessed the association between dietary patterns and the frequency of eating at fast-food or sit-down restaurants. Methods: A crosssectional study, with a sample of adults living in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (SA), was conducted between January and March 2021. An online, self-administered survey was conducted using social media and WhatsApp. A total of 399 adults living in Riyadh were included; 40.4% were males, with a mean age of 35 and standard deviation (SD) of 12 years, and had no significant health problems. Results: Using principal component analysis to analyse 15 food groups based on the food items consumed, four dietary patterns were extracted: Western, unhealthy, plant-based, and healthy. After adjusting for potential covariates, a higher frequency of eating at fast-food restaurants was significantly associated with unhealthy dietary patterns [odds ratio (OR) = 4.85, 95.0% confidence interval (CI) = 1.80, 12.59]. In contrast, participants in the highest tercile of the frequency of eating at fast-food restaurants showed lower odds of adhering to a healthy dietary pattern (OR = 0.29, 95.0% CI = 0.11, 0.71). No significant association was found between participants in the highest tercile of the frequency of eating at sit-down restaurants and their dietary patterns. Conclusion: Frequently eating at fast-food restaurants was associated with increased odds of adherence to less healthy dietary patterns and negatively associated with adherence to a healthy pattern. No association was found between sit-down restaurants and any of the identified dietary patterns. The present findings can assist stakeholders and policymakers in developing strategic plans and policies for targeted interventions for this population.

ABSTRACT

Background:Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the leading causes of cancer incidence worldwide. In Saudi Arabia, it is ranked first most common cancer in males and second most common in females. CRC is an ideal for prevention because of the high incidence rate and the relative slow progression into an adenocarcinoma. Primary health care (PHC) setting is the ideal place where CRC screening should take place. This study was intended to evaluate awareness, knowledge and attitude towards CRC screening. Methods:A survey was performed among PHC physicians in Qassim province, Saudi Arabia. An electronic questionnaire adopted from the national cancer institute was formulated. Demographic data, specialty, qualifications, years of experience, knowledge and attitudes towards CRC screening, and perceived barriers regarding CRC screening were obtained. Results:A total of 94 physicians were recruited. 39.4% from the sample are females, and 60.6% are males. 99% of physicians agree that colorectal cancer screeningis needed when age appropriate. However, 68% were very compliant in CRC screening in clinical practice. Only 52% of physicians were familiar with national CRC cancer screening guidelines. 53% of physicians scored correct on the age appropriate to initiateCRC screening for average risk patients. Conclusions:More efforts should be given to improve knowledge of primary healthcare providers regarding CRC prevention. More funding and planning are needed to provide primary health care providers with the required tools and systems in order to make CRC prevention more efficient.

ABSTRACT

Background: Postpartum depression is one of the most common, but often unrecognized, complications of childbirth and is considered as a serious psychological disorder that can affect women during or after birth and during pregnancy. Its risk increases during the ?rst 90 days and can last up to nearly two years. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) and correlate it with variables of obstetric and demographic predictors among females attending primary health care centres in Arar city. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study carried out by using Arabic version of questionnaire of Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) tool during the study period from August to September 2021. A total of 383 sample was taken by using convenience sampling method. Analysis was done by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Results: The prevalence of postpartum depression was 30.5%. Multiple associated factors were found to be signi?cantly increase the risk of PPD such as: females who had caesarean section delivery, unplanned pregnancy, complicated pregnancy, their baby had medical problem and had no or less husband support, had psychiatric disorders, had chronic medical problem, taking chronic medication, had life stressor, low education and low income (P < 0.05). The results of the logistic regression analysis showed that the odds of PPD signi?cantly increase in females had caesarean section delivery compared to vaginal delivery (P = .002), females had rare support from the husband (P = .002), females had psychiatric disorders (P = 0.016) and had life stressor (P = .000). Conclusions: The prevalence of postpartum depression in the city of Alar was clearly high. Our study also showed important predictors that could be used to identify high-risk females. It is advisable to provide social support to females during both prenatal and postnatal periods. Regular screening of women for postpartum depression should be encouraged for early detection and prompt intervention

ABSTRACT

Due to the urbanization and human invasion of the natural environments, great changes have been occurred on the food composition and feeding ecology of several animals especially those are sharing human his habitat in fields, wadis and gardens. The desert hedgehogs Paraechinus aethiopicus populations inhabiting different localities in Saudi Arabia were studied by using stomach contents analysis between February 2015 and October 2019. Precise analysis of stomach contents of 55 hedgehogs showed that the food of P. aethiopicus is highly diverse and highly influenced with effect of human on the environment including cooked rice, insects, plant materials, eggshells, worms, garbage and remnants of mammals and birds. Diet composition showed seasonal variations that are apparently associated with changes in the availability of different food items. The present results clearly showed that P. aethiopicus is an omnivorous mammal, capable of adapting to a great variety of dietary compositions in the study sites.

ABSTRACT

Rationale: Human myiasis is the invasion of tissue or organs by fly larvae. This could be obligatory, facultative, or accidental. Patient concerns: A 4-year-old Saudi boy complained of fever over the past three days with multiple inflamed painful dermal furuncles and worms-like discharge. Diagnosis: Furuncular obligatory myiasis caused by Wohlfahrtia magnifica. Interventions: Maggots were removed for identification. The wounds were cleaned with antiseptic dressings. Topical and oral antibiotics were applied. Outcomes: Seven days later, the wounds completely healed. Lessons: Although several reports correlated human myiasis with old age, low health status, mental retardation, and low socioeconomic status, but the patient in our case was a healthy child from a family with good socioeconomic status, good hygiene, no history of diseases or mental disability, but traveled to a village where the climate is suitable for fly breeding.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT@#Smile aesthetic, known as the static and dynamic relationship of the dentition and supporting structures to the facial soft tissues, is one of the most important elements of facial attractiveness. The objective of the study was to assess the perception of smile aesthetics and attractiveness through digital image manipulation of aesthetic variables and to compare those perceptions according to diverse sociodemographic data among female Saudi laypeople attending the dental clinic. A crosssectional study of 193 female Saudi participants were randomly selected and consented to answer the study questionnaire. Nine smile photograph images were created to compare different smile aesthetic perceptions. Two groups were recruited: 120 participants in the first group (under 30 years old) and 73 participants in the second group (30 years old or above). All participants in both groups were asked to choose the attractiveness of each smile image using multiple-choice options. A statistically significant finding showed that normal buccal corridors were chosen as the most attractive smile by 42.5% of the participants in the younger group and by a significantly higher ratio of the participants with a bachelor’s degree or higher level of education at 49% (p < 0.05). Laypeople’s preferences regarding smile attractiveness vary, but a normal appearance was the ideal choice for the majority. Orthodontic treatment should consider the general sociocultural understanding of smile perception.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Healthcare professionals use a variety of drug information sources to fulfill their clinical needs and medical practice. The aim of present study was to assess the sources of drug information among hospital' prescribers and evaluate their prescribing behavior in Saudi hospitals. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among randomly selected hospital' prescribers using a self-administered questionnaire. The response rate to the survey was 64.29%, with a ratio of 76.44% male and 23.56% female. The internet 137(60.89%) and textbooks 86(38.22%) were the prevalent sources for drug information used. Up-To-Date 107(47.56%), Medscape 105(46.67%) and FDA 74(32.88%) were the common electronic drug sources used. About 151(67.11%) of hospital' prescribers considered the pharmacist as a reliable drug information source. The most favored drug requests by hospital' prescribers from the pharmacists were drug alternatives 110(48.89%) followed by drug interactions 94(41.78%), side effects 78(34.67%) and indications 60(26.67%). Therapeutic efficacy 168(74.67%) and drug availability 73(32.44%) were the main factors contributed to the selection of drugs. This study shows some differences in hospital prescribers' perceptions of sources of drug information depending upon their background and clinical practice. Therefore, knowing appropriate drug information used by hospital' prescribers is fundamental for drug efficacy and safety in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Diabetic mellitus is an emerging disease in Saudi Arabia. In this regard, a cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted to evaluate drug utilization pattern and the cost associated with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus disease management in Saudi Arabia. Data retrieved from the electronic pharmacy records during the last one year were employed in this study. World Health Organization (WHO) Defined Daily Dose (DDD) method was employed to compute the daily price of each oral hypoglycaemic agent. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines and protocols were used to evaluate the level of adherence. A total of 17057 patients were enrolled in the study. Out of the 17057 patients enrolled in the study, 60.06 % (10246) were males and the rest females. In monotherapy, biguanides (metformin) were the most recommended and utilised drugs among 5673 patients (33.25%). The most commonly used drug combination was found to be sitagliptin+metformin (1754 units). The cost per unit dose was highest for liraglutide (A10BJ02) 258.32SR (68.79USD), and lowest for metformin (A10BA02) 0.49SR (0.13 USD). Metformin was the choice drug for the diabetes patients; biguanides (metformin) and DPP-4 (sitagliptins) were the most familiar established dose combination employed. Generic drugs should be used in order to reduce overall cost.

ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Diabetes Knowledge Test (DKT1) is a tool to assess patients’ diabetes knowledge and lifestyle. It comprises two subscales: the DKT1-general and DKT1-insulin-use. This study aimed to translate the DKT1 into Arabic and tested its validity and reliability in the Saudi population. Methods: This single-centre, cross-sectional study examined diabetes-related knowledge and lifestyle of Saudi patients with diabetes who used anti-diabetic medication and/or insulin. The participants’ mean scores for the two subscales of DKT1 were compared according to their type and duration of diabetes, medication use, and levels of education. Internal consistency tests and factor analysis were applied to examine the reliability and validity of the subscales, respectively. Results: In total, 400 individuals with diabetes (mean age 43.8±16.1 years) were enrolled. Of these, 44.2% had type 1 diabetes, and 51% were men. The Arabic version of DKT1 received internal consistency scores with coefficient alpha (95% confidence interval) values of 0.541 (0.472–0.604) and 0.741 (0.699–0.785) for the DKT1-general and DKT1-insulin-use subscales, respectively. The validity test showed that the participants with type 1 diabetes attained marginally higher score in the DKT1-general subscale and significantly higher score in the DKT1-insulin-use subscale than those with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, the scores increased with higher levels of education and longer durations of the disorder. Conclusion: The Arabic translation of DKT1 is an acceptable tool which can be used to measure the effectiveness of diabetes education programmes and would help to identify patient’s education needs.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Background: Failure of the physician to disclose potential risks and benefits associated with cosmetic procedures is one of the main causes of legal disputes over informed consent. The objective was to assess the prevalence and quality of the informed consent given by patients who undergone cosmetic procedures and its association with post-procedure adverse events. Methods: It was a cross-sectional, online, questionnaire-based study conducted during September and October 2020. Eligible adult male and female patients who were attending a governmental dermatology clinic at Al-Kharj city (Saudi Arabia) were invited to join the study. Results: A total of 246 patients were included in the study. Out of 246, 111 (45.1%) patients performed at least one cosmetic procedure before, and 89 (80.2%) of them signed an informed consent. 62 (69.7%) of them signed a consent before the procedure, 17 (19.1%) reported post-procedure adverse events, 16 (18.0%) reported dissatisfactions, and 27 (30.3%) reported either. None of the consent characteristics were significantly associated with higher prevalence of post-procedure adverse events or non-satisfactions. Conclusions: The prevalence and the quality of informed consent before cosmetic procedures are inadequate. Urgent corrections are required to protect the patient's rights and to legally protect the treating physician.

ABSTRACT

Background: It is essential that the dentist understand the positional variations of the mental foramen to perform different types of dental procedures. This study was conducted to identify the position of the mental foramen among the Saudi population of Al Hasa. Material and Methods: According to the selection criteria of 200 CBCT images, 101 images were selected. The selected images were categorized into five groups with respect to patient age. Each image was evaluated from both sides of the mandible and then recorded in six classes (position I-VI) according to the horizontal position and three classes in the vertical position. Results: In the Saudi Al Hasa population, Type 4 (at the level of 2ndpremolar) was the most common location for mental foramen in the horizontal direction, on the right side (n= 41; 40.6%) and on the left side (n=44; 43.6%). Mental foramen was found in the vertical location, Type 3 (below the apex of 1st and 2nd premolars) was found in the right side (n= 54; 53.5%) and left side (n=56; 55.4%). The position of mental foramen is not constant and changes according to gender and ethnicity. This warrants dentists to evaluate patients individually. Conclusion: Even though the present study was done with a small sample of patients it provides a picture about approximate location of mental foramen among the target group of a population.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: Metabolic bone disease concerns a broad spectrum of conditions related to reduced bone density. Metabolic bone disease has been linked to chronic inflammatory diseases, such as ulcerative colitis. This study examines the prevalence of metabolic bone disease in ulcerative colitis patients and explores possible clinical predictors. Method: The authors performed a retrospective study involving children and adolescents with confirmed ulcerative colitis between January 2013 and December 2018. Bone density was evaluated through a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan of the spine and total body. Osteoporosis was defined as a bone mineral density Z-score of <−2 and osteopenia as a Z-score of between −1.0 and −2. Results: A total of 37 patients were included in this analysis, with a mean age of 13.4 ± 3.9 years and a mean duration of illness of 2.1 ± 2.4 years. Using lumbar spine Z-scores and total body Z-scores, osteoporosis and osteopenia were identified by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan measurements in 11 patients (29.7%) and 15 patients (40.5%), and in ten patients (27%) and 13 patients (35%), respectively. Lumbar spine Z-scores were significantly positively associated with male gender (B = 2.02; p = 0.0001), and negatively associated with the presence of extraintestinal manifestations (B = −1.51, p = 0.009) and the use of biologics (B = −1.33, p = 0.004). However, total body Z-scores were positively associated with body mass index Z-scores (B = 0.26, p = 0.004) and duration of illness in years (B = 0.35, p = 0.003). Conclusions: Metabolic bone disease is very common in this cohort of Saudi Arabian children and adolescents with ulcerative colitis and its occurrence appears to increase in female patients who suffer from extraintestinal manifestations.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Background: Burnout is observed when there is chronic exposure to work-related stress. This is commonly seen in physicians and undergraduate medical students. Thus, the study assessed and compared the severity of burnout among medical and dental senior undergraduate students in Abha, Saudi Arabia. Materials and method: 517 medical and dental senior undergraduate students were evaluated using a well-designed and formulated questionnaire. Different levels of burnout were evaluated with the related scores of burnout categories. Data collected was evaluated using SPSS version 25.0. Results: A total of 772 medical and dental senior undergraduate students were included in the study, out of which 517 responded to the questionnaire, with a response rate of t 67%. Demographic parameters like age, gender, marital status, and the course were assessed. The mean scores of Personal Accomplishment (PA), Emotional Exhaustion (EE), and Depersonalization (DP) for all study subjects were recorded, showing an insignificant difference (p-value > 0.05) between both the groups in all the three categories. Considering Personal Accomplishment, the lowest mean values were observed with subjects aged 23 years old, female participants, and unmarried students, with insignificant correlation, observed statistically. Conclusion: Moderate to high levels of burnout with no significant difference was observed between medical and dental students in all three burnout categories.

ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Cervical cancer is responsible for women’s morbidity and mortality throughout the world. In developing countries women usually present in advanced stage, awareness of cervical cancer can enhance women inclination towards regular cervical screening which can detect early pre-invasive lesions. The aim of the study was to assess the awareness of cervical cancer among King Faisal University community visiting gynecology clinic, Al Ahsa Saudi Arabia. Methods: A questionnaire oriented cross-sectional study was conducted and 385 females were enrolled by systematic random sampling. The questionnaire contained 14 questions about cervical cancer and six barrier statements for cervical screening. SPSS software version 26.0 was used for data entry and analysis. Results: Total 385 females participated in the study. Majority 73.2% (n=282) had heard about cervical cancer and found significant association with age 36-45yr (p=0.001), married with two children (p=0.003), employed (p=0.001), Master level education (p=0.001) and with Saudi nationality (p=0.028). Logistic regression revealed age increases likely hood of adequate knowledge almost by one fold (odds ratio 0.954, 95% CI: 0.925-0.984) and having Saudi nationality increases it by two folds (odds ratio 2.056, 95%CI: 1.228-3.440). Almost 80% were aware of screening test, 18.4% had undergone one time an opportunistic screening test. Significant proportion of Saudi nationals had heard of HPV vaccines (p= 0.04). Conclusion: Participants had adequate knowledge of cervical cancer but had low screening test practice. There is need to implement regular cervical screening practice at national level.
